Introducing fellow Los Angeles native, multi-talented EDM and pop singer/songwriter GLNNA who just dropped her debut single 'Take The Picture'. An incredibly catchy tune where she tells the tale of releasing herself from a dysfunctional relationship. I was given the opportunity to get to know a little bit more about the single and her when I got to interview her. Check out our chat below:
MHB: Can you introduce yourself to our readers? Where are you from and what style of music do you create?
GLNNA: I’m GLNNA! Born and raised in L.A. You’re very own valley girl! My flavor of music is electronic pop.
MHB: How long has music been a part of your life and how it is it that it came to be that way?
GLNNA: As ABBA once said, I could sing before I could talk. My parents met in musical theatre, so I was brought into a pretty musical world from birth. It’s all I know!
MHB: When was it that you decided that you wanted to become a singer? When was it that you realized that your voice could be used as an instrument?
GLNNA: Since I was brought up in a musical environment, I started musical theatre at a really young age. I just had a passion for performing. I loved being able to shout from the rooftops (okay, fine the stage) and make people feel what I was feeling. I never stopped from that point on.
MHB: Growing up, who were some of your biggest musical influences? What artists today influence you and your music?
GLNNA: I had a pretty broad spectrum of music to listen to, thanks to mom and dad. Anything from the Rent soundtrack, to Phil Collins, to Billie Holiday, to Britney Spears, and the list goes on. Today, I try to keep the same diversity flowing through my ears. My current faves are Tritonal, the 1975, Kendrick Lamar, Bülow, and Astrid S.
MHB: Without using any musical terms, how would you describe your music to a new listener?
GLNNA: I love to go out and have fun, but I am also a very emotional person, so my music definitely reflects that. The best way to describe it is “dancing to a broken heart”. It’s okay to be sad and feel broken, but it’s also important to feel good and forget about things.
MHB: Can you tell me a little about your creative process?
GLNNA: My creative process is all over the place. Sometimes I write chords first and follow them with a melody, then lyrics. Sometimes I think of a great hook a cappella and build the music around that. It honestly depends on my mood.
MHB: Now, what can you tell me about your new single 'Take The Picture'? What was the inspiration behind the song? Will there be a music video?
GLNNA: This song was written the day I found out that my ex had a new girlfriend.... through Twitter. Social media can be such a toxic platform and one thing that’s for sure- if you go looking for something, you’ll find it. So stop lurking!! I am very excited to this release and the mini music video that will be released with it.
MHB: Is there an album in the works?
GLNNA: I think for now, I will just focus on releasing song by song. I have so many tracks that I can’t wait to release. I think these days, it’s better to release singles!
MHB: What can we expect to see from you in the next coming months?
GLNNA: More music! I am currently in the studio with a couple of different producers. We are finalizing songs and making sure they are at their best for the listeners. Collaborations are on their way!
MHB: If you could choose one artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?
GLNNA: Robyn. Her music has always been a huge inspiration for me. She’s always pushing boundaries and just does what feels right, I think. That shows in her music.
MHB: Here at MHB, our focus is primarily on new and undiscovered artists, who are some new emerging artists that you would recommend?
GLNNA: Girl Wilde- her sweet and sultry voice will melt you. Shallows- this girl/boy duo will give you chills with their electro-rock vibes.
MHB: If you were left stranded on an island but given the option to have one album to keep with you, what would be your album of choice?
GLNNA: Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. Not only would it be fitting for the occasion, but I grew up listening to The Beach Boys with my Dad.
MHB: What is it that gets you up every morning?
GLNNA: Coffee.... just kidding! Well not really, but definitely knowing that I can get up and do what I love every single day.
MHB: What piece of advice did you receive that stuck with you? What words of advice would you give to a new artist trying to make it in music?
GLNNA: That nobody will work harder for you than you yourself. You can have all of the opportunities and people behind you, but you are the leader of your own pack. That’s also advice I would give to anyone starting in the industry. Be strong and confident, but also be a sponge. Take every piece of advice in and apply it to yourself and your career. Follow your musical gut.
MHB: Can you share one random fact about yourself?
GLNNA: When I was 12, I went to Cairo, Egypt to represent America in a singing competition. My first kiss was on a camel in front of the pyramids. I’ll leave it at that.
MHB: And lastly... What does music mean to you?
GLNNA: Music to me is a universal language that speaks in emotions. Everyone can understand the tone and emotion from a song, no matter what language they speak. I strive to be a voice for people who can’t express what they’re feeling.
This is one emerging songstress who has quite the future ahead of her and that you are going to want to keep your eye on as I was given the opportunity to check out her other upcoming singles and they are fire. In the meantime, check out her debut single 'Take The Picture' here:
