Introducing London/Leeds based artist, composer, pianist and singer/songwriter IZZY FLYNN. Strongly influenced by Jazz, Electronica and R&B styles, this dark electronic songstress has no musical boundaries. Her musical caliber is evident in her soulful vocals and her ability to combine the many different styles of music she's influenced by with her musical knowledge to create beautiful works of art. I got the opportunity to learn a little more about her which you can read about in my interview with her below:
MHB: Where are you from and can you touch a little on the music scene there and what you like about it?
Izzy: Hey! I’m from Kingston, London and have spent time studying Jazz in Leeds. Both are great for music, the benefit of somewhere like Leeds is that you get to know the local musicians and who to collaborate with pretty quickly, and London is obviously buzzing with not just great music opportunities but culture, art and all that jazz!
MHB: Do you play any instruments? If so, which and for how long?
Izzy: Piano! ages! also a bit of accordion, but only on sunny days.
MHB: How long has music been a part of your life and how did it come to be a part of it?
Izzy: Since I was 7 I’ve been playing the piano and writing music, both my mother and grandmother play piano and many of my cousins have musical instruments permanently attached to them!
MHB: When was it that you realized your voice could be used as a special instrument and that making music was what you wanted to do?
Izzy: Oh nice question. I’ve always written for lots of different people and instruments. It was after doing a couple of country music tours, where the sound guy and band gave me some nice compliments, that I thought…you know what…I quite like this singing malarky!
MHB: Who were some of your biggest musical influences growing up and who are some current artists who are influencing you and your music?
Izzy: I watched one of them tonight…James Blake…he’s a class act. And coincidentally he did a cover of my most favorite ever song ‘Cause of You’ by Joni Mitchell. I’m also addicted to Lauryn Hill and Janelle Monae.
MHB: Without using any musical terms, how would you describe your sound to a new listener?
Izzy: Dark, descriptive, artistic, juicy?!
MHB: Can you tell me a little bit about your creative process? It is typically the same or does it differ?
Izzy: Usually chords and melodies come sort of simultaneously, but also i’ll make a rough beat with some amateur beat boxing, thinking of tempo and style/genre. Melody is always of top importance, I like memorable tunes, no matter what the genre.
MHB: If you had the opportunity to collab with any artist of your choosing, who would you choose?
Izzy: Probably right now I’d say James Blake.
MHB: Lets talk about your latest single 'Faith'... How did it come together and what was the inspiration behind it?
Izzy: It came together over a long time! Its essentially about hope and reminding people to have Faith in themselves. There’s a lot of layers in this one, compared to the previous 2 tracks, Medicine and Gracious. You maybe find something new on each listen!
MHB: What projects are you currently working on and is there an album in the works? What can we expect to see from you in the coming months?
Izzy: Yes definitely, I’m working on a slightly more R&B themed, slightly duttier EP (if I can use that word). I’ve got an album of ideas, in fact a lot more than that, but it’s choosing the right ones and making sure they fit well together collectively.
MHB: Can you tell me one random fact about yourself?
Izzy: I love to paint, it bring sanity to my life! As a musician, I’m sure others will concur, its hard to turn your brain off outside of the hours of 9-5, I have to actively force myself to stop thinking about music by doing something else, and art is so relaxing right now!
MHB: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself and/or your music?
Izzy: Yeah watch out for the music video coming for ‘Faith’ soon, its a shocker!
Izzy's EP is scheduled for release on November 18th but you can check out her latest single 'Faith' below:
